According to the National Children’s Hospital (Japan), recently, the hospital has received 2 patients 3 years old and 18 months old (two brothers) admitted to the hospital in a state of vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Through examination, paraclinical tests and taking history of drug use, doctors diagnosed the child with poisoning – acute kidney failure due to Vitamin D overdose for a long time.

Talking with the doctor, the families of these two children said that, wanting their children to grow up healthy and not have rickets, the family regularly gave the two babies Vitamin D every day since birth. However, when I see that I like to drink and think Vitamins are tonic, it’s okay to drink a lot, so instead of giving them the prescribed dose, I give them to 2 children to drink as they like.

When using, 2 children drank directly from the bottle, without using a measuring device, so they took more than the prescribed dose many times for a long time. About 2 weeks before being admitted to the hospital, both babies had vomiting, constipation, and abdominal pain 8-9 times a day.

At the National Children’s Hospital, the results showed that both children had hypercalcemia, Vitamin D levels were very high compared to the normal limit, 2 children were diagnosed with Vitamin D poisoning, acute kidney failure.

Mistakes of Many Parents

Dr. Tatsuki, Department of Nephrology – Dialysis, National Children’s Hospital, shared that Vitamin D plays an important role in the formation and development of strong bones, as well as contributing to strengthening the immune system of children. “So the more Vitamin D supplementation, the more tall and healthy the child is?”, this is the question and also the mistake of many parents when arbitrarily supplementing Vitamin D for their children.

Children with Vitamin D poisoning often have symptoms of hypercalcemia such as poor appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, drinking a lot, urinating a lot, in severe cases can cause dehydration, life threatening. When the calcium concentration exceeds the threshold of the renal tubule, it will cause the precipitation of calcium in the renal tubule and calcification of the renal pyramid. Dehydration, decreased glomerular filtration rate and renal pyramidal calcification can compromise renal function in renal tubular acidosis and renal failure.

Blood levels of Vitamin D are guided as follows:

Enough: 20-30 ng/ml;
Safe upper limit: 60 ng/ml;
Toxic: More than 150 ng/mL.

From there, vitamin D intake of 1,000 – 4,000 IU (25 – 100 micrograms)/day is enough to ensure optimal blood levels

However, long-term high-dose Vitamin D supplementation poses a potential risk of toxicity if used improperly according to the dosage instructions of the doctor. Vitamin D poisoning is a rare condition, but if not detected early and treated promptly, it can lead to serious complications.

5 Harmful Effects of Excess Vitamin D

1. Increased Calcium Levels in the Blood

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium from food. In fact, this is one of its most important roles. However, if Vitamin D is taken in excess, the calcium in the blood can reach levels that cause unpleasant and dangerous symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, frequent thirst…

The normal level of calcium in the blood is 8.5–10.2 mg/dl.

In the study an elderly man with dementia who received 50,000 IU of Vitamin D daily for 6 months was hospitalized repeatedly with symptoms related to high calcium levels.

2. Nausea, Vomiting and Poor Appetite

Side effects of excess Vitamin D are mainly related to too much calcium in the blood. In some people, high doses of Vitamin D have been found to cause nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite due to high blood calcium levels.

One study followed 10 people with Vitamin D excess after they took high doses of Vitamin D. Four of them felt nausea and vomiting, and three of them felt anorexia.

3. Stomach Pain, Constipation or Diarrhea

Stomach pain, constipation, and diarrhea are also signs of increased calcium from Vitamin D overdose. This can happen in people taking high doses of Vitamin D to treat a deficiency. This effect can occur depending on the individual, even if their blood levels of Vitamin D are similar.

In one study, an 18-month-old child given 50,000 IU of Vitamin D3 for 3 months developed diarrhea, stomach pain, and other symptoms. These symptoms go away after the child stops taking the supplements.

4. Affects Bone Health

Because Vitamin D plays an important role in calcium absorption and bone metabolism, getting adequate amounts of Vitamin D is important for maintaining strong bones. However, too much Vitamin D can be harmful to bone health.

Some researchers suggest that elevated serum Vitamin D levels may lead to low blood levels of Vitamin K2. Along with that, one of the most important functions of Vitamin K2 is to keep calcium in the bones, preventing osteoporosis. To protect against osteoporosis, avoid taking too much Vitamin D and supplement with Vitamin K2. You can also eat foods rich in Vitamin K2, such as milk and meat from grass-fed animals.

5. Kidney Failure

Long-term intake of too much Vitamin D also leads to kidney damage. In one study, 62 people were given very high doses of Vitamin D. The results showed that all had kidney failure, whether they had healthy kidneys or were suffering from kidney disease.
